This beautiful region of south west France has much to offer. Lot-et-Garonne is named after its two principal rivers. The Garonne is one of the major rivers in France, running from the Pyrenees (where it has its source in Spain) to the Atlantic at Bordeaux. The Lot rises in the Massif Central and flows through some spectacular gorges and some of the most beautiful scenery in France to join the Garonne north west of Agen.

Lot-et-Garonne, which is just south of the Dordogne, is still a well-guarded secret with historic towns and villages, and breathtaking countryside. In July this department is a mass of bright yellow as the sunflower crop, grown for vegetable oil, matures. The region also produces a large amount of tobacco, much of which was until recently processed locally at Tonneins. Finally, of course, many acres are devoted to vineyards, producing excellent wines and plum orchards which produce the famous pruneaux d'Agen. Also this area is famous for its foie gras!

There is golf at Castelnaud with an 18 hole championship course and also at Tombeboeuf where there is a 9 hole course with practice area and pro shop. Both of the courses have clubs, trolleys and buggies for hire.

There are many water activities on the Rivers, where you can hire canoes and water ski or simply just spend the day fishing. There is a 100 acre park at Miramont (20 mins) with a 25 acre lake where children can swim and also horse ride.

Agen is the capital of this department and is a 35 minute drive. Agen has much to offer with regards to shopping and restaurants, and there is also a theme park, open summer months only, to amuse children.

Bordeaux - the principal port of Aquitaine and one of the major cities of France. It has everything you would expect to find in a large city (Museums, theatres, shops, sports venues and of course some of the world's finest wines are produced in the surrounding areas. A visit to the vineyards and wine tasting are available. (Drive time 90 mins).

Archachon - this chic seaside town is well worth a visit. The town is beautifully laid out with a fine tree lined promenade and white sandy beach. A few miles south of the town you will find the giant sand dunes, known as the Grand Pyla, and a few minutes further on the pine forests leading down to the sea (drive time 1h 50m).
